INTRO TO MECHANICAL DESIGN (MEAM 101) - Elective

Learn about the fundamentals of Mechanical Design!

Covering the fundamentals of the modern mechanical design process, from basic need-finding through to computerized manufacturing, the topics in this hands-on, project-based course include: product definition (need-finding, observation, sketching, brainstorming, and prototyping); computer-aided design (part creation, assemblies, and animation using SolidWorks 2009); basic computer simulation and analysis; rapid prototyping (laser cutter and 3-D fused-deposition modeling); basic CNC machining; and general engineering design practices (materials, dimensioning, tolerances, etc.).

Student Comments:

  • "Great class, the projects are fun and interesting, and valuable skills are learned, especially in SolidWorks. Great for any engineering major, not just MEAM."
  • "Since this course was based primarily on the learning and use of SolidWorks, I felt that I was truly learning something that would be useful to me in the future."

Note: SEAS seniors are not permitted to register for this course. We encourage students to take this course early in their academic careers.
