Graduate Program

Welcome from the Chair

Greetings!

Welcome to the web pages of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics (MEAM) Graduate Group at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn). Penn's graduate programs are organized around Graduate Groups instead of the traditional departmental divisions. This unique system makes it possible to have a vibrant group with people of diverse backgrounds to reflect the contemporary areas of research. It is a dynamic system wherein the composition of the graduate group can be changed as necessary to facilitate multi-disciplinary research in the cutting-edge areas. At this time, MEAM graduate group has faculty from anesthesiology, chemical engineering, computer and information science, infectious deceases, material science, orthopedic surgery, and Wharton school of business, in addition to the core MEAM faculty. The icon of mechanical engineering today is not a gear or a wrench; it could very well be a biological cell, a molecule, or an atom! MEAM graduate group is geared towards this modern view. We also continue to emphasize the fundamental science of solids and fluids, and have thriving programs in cell mechanics, computational mechanics, design, energy engineering, robotics, and MEMS to name a few. Come, join us to explore and contribute to the magnificent world of mechanical engineering!

We have assembled a wealth of information in these web pages to familiarize you with our system and activities. In particular, meet the members of graduate group and learn about where our alumni are. We have a rigorous curriculum and lively atmosphere that is conducive to conduct quality research. We make effective use of our small size to give you that extra personal attention and care which you need during your exciting journey of graduate research. If you like the lyrics of the song "sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name and are glad that you came," then this is the place for your graduate studies -- to enrich your intellectual capabilities and feel at home throughout your stay with us. Be assured that you will be in good hands!

With warm regards,

Pedro Ponte Castañeda
