The Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics Department is part of the School of Engineering and Applied Science. The main department office is located on the 2nd floor of the Towne Building, Room 229.

Parking

The University offers parking for a fee at several public facilities. Several lots convenient to MEAM are: the Palestra lot #5 on 33rd Street (between South and Walnut) ,garage #37 at 34th and Chestnut Streets, garage #30 at 38th and Walnut Streets, and garage #40 at 40th and Walnut Streets. Allow 10-20 minutes for walking from these parking lots.

Street parking is permitted, but tends to be tight. Metered parking is available on most streets through the University, including those closest to MEAM: Walnut, Chestnut, 33rd, and 34th (north of Walnut). Meters generally require a quarter for each quarter hour of parking. Most metered parking is limited to two or three hours until evening. Regulations vary by block, and by day and time. Be sure to check the closest green or red parking signs for details.

Directions

By Car

From the Northeast:
Take the New Jersey Turnpike to exit 4 for Route 73 North. Proceed on Route 73 North to I-295 South. From I-295 South, take exit 26 of I-76 West. Cross over to Philadelphia via the Walt Whitman Bridge. This section of I-76 is also called the Schuylkill Expressway. Take Exit 346A for South Street, and turn left onto South Street to enter campus. Note: Exit 346A is a LEFT LANE EXIT. Turn right onto 33rd St. The Towne Building is halfway down the street on the left hand side.  The Palestra parking lot is on the right side.

From the Northeast Extension, Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-476):
Take the Pensylvania Turnpike Northest Extension, South to the PA Turnpike, East-West Interchange. Remain on I-476 (The PA TP, northeast extension portion of I-476, terminates at the PA TP east-west interchange). Continue on I-476 South, approximately 3.6 miles to Exit 16A, I-76 East (Schuylkill Expressway). Take I-76 East approximately 12.6 miles to Exit 346A, South Street, which EXITS ON THE LEFT. Turn right onto South Street to enter the campus.

From the Northwest:
Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Exit 326, Valley Forge Interchange. Take I-76 East (Schuylkill Expressway) approximately 17 miles to Exit 346A, South Street, which EXITS ON THE LEFT. Turn right onto South Street to enter the campus. Turn right onto 33rd St. The Towne Building is halfway down the street on the left hand side.  The Palestra parking lot is on the right side.

From the North:
Take I-95 South to I-676 Westbound toward Center City. From I-676 exit in less than two miles taking "exit only" ramp towards the airport marked I-76 East. Proceed less than a mile to Exit 346A, South Street, which EXITS ON THE LEFT. Turn right onto South Street to enter the campus. Turn right onto 33rd St. The Towne Building is halfway down the street on the left hand side.  The Palestra parking lot is on the right side.

From the South:
Take I-95 North to Exit 13 signed "291 West to I-76". Follow 291 West across (Platt) Bridge to 26th Street, which leads directly onto I-76 West. Take I-76 West 3 miles to Exit 346A, South Street, which EXITS ON THE LEFT. Turn left onto South Street to enter the campus. Turn right onto 33rd St. The Towne Building is halfway down the street on the left hand side.  The Palestra parking lot is on the right side.

From the Airport

The Philadelphia International Airport is located in the Southwest section of the city, approximately twenty minutes from the University of Pennsylvania campus.

Visitors driving from the airport should take I-95 North to the I-676/Center City Philadelphia exit, which is approximately seven miles North of the airport. Follow I-676 West (the Vine Street Expressway) until I-76 East (the Schuylkill Expressway). Follow I-76 East until Exit 346-A (old exit number 40) -- South Street (a left-lane exit). Turn right onto South Street to enter campus.

Convenient train service from the airport to 30th Street Station is available through SEPTA's Airport Express Train which leaves every half-hour. The fare is $5.00 (subject to change), and the trip takes approximately twenty-five minutes. The University City Station is about a five minute walk west on Spruce Street to our campus.

A metered cab ride from the airport to campus generally costs $30, including the tip, and takes approximately 20 minutes.

From 30th Street

The campus can be reached from 30th Street Station by cab, on SEPTA's Green Line (to either 36th and Sansom Streets or 37th and Spruce Streets) or the Market-Frankford Line (to 34th and Market Streets), or by foot; 30th Street Station is a fifteen-minute walk from the heart of campus.

Walking Directions from the Inn at Penn and Sheraton Hotel

Walking from the Inn at Penn, 3600 Sansom Street:

Exit the Inn at Penn on Sansom Street and turn right (east) on Sansom. Walk to 34th Street and turn right. Walk on 34th Street past Walnut Street. Cross to the opposite (left) side of 34th Street. Just past the intersection, take one of two paths on the left and follow to Towne Building. (You’ll see the glass Levine Building to the left). Enter Towne and proceed to the 2nd floor.

Walking from The Sheraton University City, 36th & Chestnut Streets:

The Sheraton is located at 36th & Chestnut Streets. Exit the Sheraton on Chestnut Street and turn left (east) on Chestnut. Walk to 34th Street and turn right. Walk on 34th Street past Walnut Street. Cross to the opposite (left) side of 34th Street. Just past the intersection, take one of two paths on the left and follow to Towne Building. (You’ll see the glass Levine Building to the left). Enter Towne and proceed to the 2nd floor.
